Talking Turkeys | Penguin Book Cover Competition
Brief
The brief required an original interpretation of the children's poetry book, Talking Turkeys. They wanted an imaginative concept with a strong use of typography that would appeal to children aged 8-12 and the adults who are likely to buy it for them.
Insight/Inspiration
“I’ve never seen a flower fight,
It seems,
Not all living things do”
Eye See, Benjamin Zephaniah
Solution
There were a number of themes within this poetry book but my outcome is influenced by these particular lines which made me think of the flower power movement, a symbol for nonviolence, love and peace. I felt it covered a number of prominent themes within the book and would be a suitable visual language to adopt because its vibrant and uplifting aesthetic can show children how they can use their voices to make positive change in the world.
The biggest challenge was to ensure the design still had a connection to the title Talking Turkeys so I decided to made a link through my visuals. I have decided to use the petals of my floral pattern to form the shape of turkey feathers.
The colour palette celebrates the poets Rastafarian beliefs and Jamaican writing style, whilst typography has celebrated poetry by incorporating letterforms as pattern and floral motifs.
