The Manmade Hills of Governors Island | ISTD Education Brief
Insight
According to the United Nations, two-thirds of the global population will live in urban environments by the year 2050. City living has decreased our interaction with nature and now more than ever, people are spending more time indoors. They are missing the benefits that nature has to offers, such as increased creativity, reduced stress and overall improved wellbeing. The brief was to create a typographic piece that provides an indirect experience and celebrates our human connection with nature.
Core Though - Engineered Nature
Solution
The Manmade Hills of Governors Island’s narrative explores the evolutionary timeline of the island in New York; documenting its history as a former military base and its transformation into a newly landscaped public park, offering an escape from the auditory and visual noise usually associated with cities. The content celebrates the construction process of the island’s biggest transformation, the addition of four hills. The hills are a complete contrast to the gridded, flat landscape of its New York City neighbour and are a true example of engineered nature.
Throughout the publication, I wanted to typographically show the contrast between rigid, technical design and natural elements. I have also made reference to the additional topography throughout the publication by the use of plus symbols. Additional glyphs and fleurons celebrate the duality and contrast of hard and soft sense of constructed biophilia. Running headers and footers have been positioned in the left and right margins, providing space at the top of each page to reflect the biophilic experience that visitors gain from the summit of Outlook Hill. It is my hope that those that engage with this case study can experience the potential power of biophilic design and its importance to our health and wellbeing.
